THE LAST TRICK-OR-TREATERS of the night had come and gone as Maggie lay sprawled across the bottom of the stairs. While she knew it would never be possible to completely shake the memory of that night exactly one year ago, still she prayed every day for a diluted version: the abridged Reader’s Digest edition, if you will. Of course, this would do nothing to assuage her loneliness. Or the isolation and abandonment that scraped her hollow on a daily basis and consumed so much of her emotional real estate. But it would be a mercy to no longer hear the sounds with such intensity; to not imagine the scene quite as vividly. And in some ways, this prayer was coming true. Recently, Maggie had come to realize that some parts of the memory had begun to waver, like reading a page from a book by viewing it through a glass of water in your hand. The images and sounds still pulled at her stomach, but at least this easing off was a start.

Now, there was a part of the memory Magdalena’s mind had suppressed completely. And that was the fact that after she spoke to the emergency operator, she did call Carlo’s cell. For Maggie, that call, and everything she heard in it, had simply never taken place. She therefore had no memory of hearing her husband’s last breaths before his lungs blistered. She did not hear the macabre whistling of the sirens and the flute. And most importantly, she never heard that child’s voice, his exuberant cheers or perverse laughter as he rejoiced in spectating Carlo’s torture through one clouded eye.

But deep down, Magdalena always sensed there was something more to Carlo’s accident than her memory would allow. Something that, if she were unable to bring herself to remember, would very likely mark the beginning of her inevitable end…
